Having a Blast at MacKellar!

Innovation & Technology | Sep 05, 2024

Controlled Production Blasting

Controlled blasting is a critical part of our work, allowing us to efficiently break through hard rock to uncover valuable resources.

At MacKellar we use precise scientific method in our blasting operations at the mining sites where we operate.

There’s a lot involved beyond triggering explosions when it comes to blasting work and our engineers are experts. It takes planning and precise execution to make sure the blasting is done safely and with little harm to the environment.

Every blast hole is timed meticulously to ensure an even spread of energy throughout the process, beginning with the holes and progressing inward in a strategic order to avoid random fragmentation patterns. Thorough calculations are made to ensure the energy released from each blast is directed efficiently to achieve a great result.

Minor variations in timing (as small as milliseconds) can significantly impact the outcomes achieved in our operations. A focus on meticulous detail is needed and we’re always up to the task.

When it comes to our blasting work at MacKellar safety is always first – it’s not just about technical know-how but also diligent planning and precise scheduling. This helps minimise risks and maintains a secure environment for our team and the local environment around us.

We also prioritise sustainability by repurposing materials produced during the blasting process for structural fill and construction purposes, to reduce the requirement for transporting materials from other locations. This practice helps ease traffic congestion on roads and highways while enhancing safety and reducing our environmental impact.

Strategies to manage dust, gases, vibration and noise are also implemented when carrying out blasting activities to ensure our operations don’t disturb the surrounding wildlife and nearby residents.

With our advanced methods that prioritise safety and environmental considerations in blasting operations, we are proud to contribute to the projects we work on. It’s all part of our commitment to sustainable resource management.
